The birth of a child is a very special time in the life of a family and we look forward to welcoming you to St. Mary's and to supporting you in the years to come.
Baptism at St. Mary's usually takes place at the 11.00am Service on Sunday or later in the day at 1.00pm. To give you the opportunity of asking any questions you may have and to help you familiarise yourself with the service, you are invited to a preparation evening a week or so before the ceremony. This will last about an hour. Your Godparents will also receive an invitation to attend.
You are invited to choose Godparents for your child. They are required to be baptised and if they are not already confirmed they will be encouraged to take this important step. The tradition is to have at least three (usually two of the same sex as the child) who are themselves Baptised and Confirmed. Choose them with care - not just because they have recently become friends or because you feel you ought to. Ask yourself: will they help our child to know and love the Lord Jesus and follow the Christian way?

A welcoming one-stop website for parents, godparents and guests going to a christening, offering details about preparing for baptism, what happens at the service in a step-by-step guide, and continuing the journey of faith afterwards. The website includes our Light a Candle feature which encourages visitors to take a moment to pray for a child who has been, or will be, christened and then light a virtual candle, which they can then share on social media.
